What kind of staying power will “Thunderbolts*” have at the box office?
That’s the big question after the film’s second weekend, where “Thunderbolts*” collected $34 million overseas and $67.1 million globally. So far, “Thunderbolts*” is persisting far better than recent Marvel Cinematic Universe titles like “Captain America: Brave New World,” “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” all of which slid significantly in subsequent outings and failed to get out of the red. Still, “Thunderbolts*” carries a hefty $180 million production budget, not including at least $100 million in marketing expenses. Since theater owners get to keep half of ticket sales, “Thunderbolts*” needs a long life in theaters to justify its price tag.
“Thunderbolts*” has enjoyed far better reviews and word-of-mouth compared to those comic book installments, which analysts believe will help the movie stick around on the big screen. It won’t face direct competition until “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” lands over Memorial Day weekend. So far, “Thunderbolts*” has grossed $143 million internationally and $128.5 million domestically for a worldwide tally of $272.2 million. Top territories include the United Kingdom with $15.5 million, China with $13.8 million and Mexico with $11.2 million.
Elsewhere, “A Minecraft Movie” scored a major box office milestone as ticket sales surpassed the $900 million mark. The Warner Bros. PG video game adaptation, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has generated $500.6 million internationally and $909.6 million to date. So far, it’s the highest grossing Hollywood movie of the year.
“Sinners” is also showing remarkable box office endurance, clearing $283.3 million globally after four weekends of release. The R-rated horror movie isn’t resonating as strongly in overseas markets, where “Sinners” has generated $68.9 million to date. But enthusiasm in North America, where Ryan Coogler’s film has become a sensation with $214.4 million, is more than making up the difference.
