In 2021, some 11 years after Joe Sheridan and Meath had written themselves into GAA infamy, the Irish Independent compiled a list of the 50 biggest GAA controversies of the previous 50 years. Sheridan’s last-gasp goal, that denied Louth a first Leinster title in 53 years, ranked at number four.
It sat behind the emotive opening of Croke Park and scrapping of Rule 42, Cork’s ‘dirtiest’ war and the strike of the 2000s and the riotous hurling summer of 1998 that began with Colin Lynch’s three-month ban and raged on with a sit-down protest on the pitch after an All-Ireland semi-final was blown up early.
