Virginia Giuffre‘s lawyer Karrie Louden is addressing her previous comments about her client’s recent death.
“I would like to set the record straight as things I said have been misinterpreted,” the attorney said in a statement to People on Friday, May 2, clarifying that she is “not willing to speculate on her cause of death as to whether it was suicide or misadventure.”
Louden added that she does “not believe” that Giuffre’s death was “suspicious in any way.”
“The Coroner will determine in due course the cause of death and that will be established based on the evidence,” Louden shared, noting that she is “not critical of the police nor am I demanding any investigation.”
The statement continued: “The police are only able to release limited information to non-family members as is their standard procedure. The police are already conducting an investigation and will no doubt provide all of their evidence to the Coroner.”
Louden expressed her condolences with Giuffre’s family and friends, calling her “an absolute inspiration.”
“She will be greatly missed by all who knew her,” she concluded.
Us Weekly has reached out to Louden for comment.
News broke on April 25 that Giuffre, who previously accused Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew of sexual abuse and sex trafficking, died of suicide. She was 41.
“Giuffre lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking,” Giuffre’s family said in a statement to People at the time. “Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors. Despite all the adversity she faced in her life, she shone so bright. She will be missed beyond measure. The light of her life were her children Christian, Noah, and Emily.”
Following Giuffre’s death, Louden shared that she was shocked to learn of her client’s passing.
“When I got the phone call, I was like, ‘Are you joking?’” Louden said in an interview with The Sun published on Monday, April 28. “Because there was no sign that that was something she was considering.”
Louden noted that while Giuffre was “in a lot of pain,” she had been “looking forward to things” in her future.
“There’s suicide and then there’s misadventure,” she said.
Weeks earlier, Giuffre shared that she was involved in a near-fatal car crash.
“This year has been the worst start to a new year, but I won’t bore anyone with the details but I think it important to note that when a school bus driver comes at you driving 110km as we were slowing for a turn that no matter what your car is made of it might as well be a tin can,” she wrote via Instagram. I’ve gone into kidney renal failure, they’ve given me four days to live, transferring me to a specialist hospital in urology. I’m ready to go, just not until I see my babies one last time, but you know what they say about wishes.”
