The legendary Neary’s is a curtain call away from the Gaiety Theatre and has had its fair share of drama over the years

At first glance, Neary’s pub on Chatham Street seems sedate and genteel with its timeless ruby red curtains and ancient gas lamps.
But the pub just a curtain call away from Grafton Street has enjoyed its fair share of drama – from the Women’s Liberation Movement staging protests over half a century ago to an actor in full admiral’s uniform fleeing the stage of the nearby Gaiety Theatre and approaching the bar carrying a ceremonial sword. On one occasion, according to the long-departed stage performer Noel Purcell, Neary’s was visited by a corpse that arrived by taxi. But more on that impromptu wake later.
