Businessman Fred Trenaman has written to Dublin City Council backing a revamp plan by Dee and Ian Lawlor for their property, Coolbeg, on the road.
Coolbeg was used to film scenes for the 1990s movie Far and Away, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The house was bought for €12.23m in a deal that closed last November, according to an entry on the Residential Property Price Register.
The letter of support by Mr Trenaman is in the same spirit as Patrick and Karen Doran writing to the council earlier this year to back a Shrewsbury Road “superhome” plan by their neighbours, Deirdre O’Malley and aircraft leasing tycoon Aengus Kelly.
The Dorans told the council they were of the view that the proposed development for Nos 5-7 “will further enhance the architectural quality of this significant road”.
In his letter, included as part of a 34-page submission drawn up by Thornton O’Connor Town Planning on behalf of the Lawlors, Mr Trenaman says he wishes “to express my support for the development and I note that the sympathetic and sensitive design of the proposals will lead to a seamless integration with existing buildings on the streetscape”.
“I look forward to the property being utilised as a single family home again in the near future.”

Under previous ownership, the property was mainly used as a rental property.
The Lawlors are seeking planning permission to provide additional residential extension, car garage, and a modified vehicular entrance with an additional pedestrian entrance at Coolbeg. The home would then have a gross floor area of 6,932sqft – almost six times the size of an average three-bed semi- detached house.
In the planning submission, a director at Thornton O’Connor states that the proposed works “will vastly improve the residential amenity for the occupiers of the property whilst respecting neighbouring properties”.
She said the extension “does not provide any windows along the northern elevation, to prevent any overlooking onto the neighbouring property.”
It adds that the proposed works “will result in a high-quality single storey extension that provides additional floor space for the applicant”.
A decision is due in June.
