Jeff Sperbeck’s family has broken their silence following his sudden death.
“We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved Jeff Sperbeck. He was a wonderful father, husband, brother, son and friend to many and will be profoundly missed by all,” read a statement shared with TMZ on Wednesday, April 30. “We are grieving this unimaginable loss as a family alongside our dearest friends the Elways and the many other clients Jeff called friends.”
The family noted that they are “grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support” that they’ve received from the public but concluded by asking for privacy at this time.
Sperbeck died at age 62 after being involved in a golf cart accident with longtime friend and former NFL quarterback John Elway. He is survived by wife Cori and three children.
News broke on Wednesday that Elway, 64, was allegedly driving a golf cart at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California, on Saturday, April 26, when Sperbeck — the retired football star’s former manager — fell off and hit his head. (TMZ reported that there was no indication of negligent driving on Elway’s part.)
According to local outlet KESQ, Sperbeck was placed on life support following the incident.
“It was a reported fall from a golf cart and the patient was transported to a local area trauma center in unknown condition,” a spokesperson for Cal Fire shared in a statement on Tuesday, April 29.
An eyewitness named Ali Simon told KESQ that the accident — and Sperbeck’s death — was “so sad.” She recalled arriving at the scene and seeing Sperbeck “unfortunately lying on the ground” with a crowd of people around him.
“It was so scary; it was nothing like we’ve ever seen,” she said. “You just don’t think you’re ever going to witness anything like that.”
Elway also addressed Sperbeck’s death in his own statement on Wednesday.
“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” he told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
He added: “My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”
