Mary Seery Kearney with surrogacy advocates
Former Senator Mary Seery Kearney is currently in Brussels participating in EU group meetings regarding surrogacy legislation.
Italy has recently passed legislation that makes surrogacy a universal crime. This means an Italian couple could engage in lawful surrogacy in Ireland and under law, once it is commenced, they would face criminal proceedings were they to return to Italy.
This move is in breach of EU law by Italy, with similar rumblings coming from Spain.
While in Brussels Ms Seery Kearney will attend a “cross-European group meeting addressing surrogacy status regulations and modelling the Irish legislation”.
Both domestic and international surrogacy is legal in Ireland.
Commentary has found Italy moving towards an ultra-conservative formation of family.
Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni called the new surrogacy ban “common sense” and celebrated it as protecting women and children from “commodification”.
Tomorrow Ms Seery Kearney will be accompanied by advocates from both Spain and Italy to a meeting with Commissioner Michael McGrath.
The former Senator is a barrister and business owner. While in Brussels she will also meet with MEPs to discuss AI and attend the World Employment Confederation.
