LONDON — As they approach their 14th wedding anniversary on April 29, Kate Middleton and Prince William’s love story remains something of a modern fairy tale. The couple met in the early 2000s whilst studying at University of St. Andrews — with Middleton notoriously catching her now-husband’s eye when modeling a sheer dress at the college’s annual fashion show. Since marrying in 2011, the couple have used coordinated clothing as a way to signal their bond.
In recent years, the couple have upped their sartorial chops as they prepare to become the country’s future queen and king, according to Bethan Holt, author of “The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style” and “The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Royal Style” — but their love of dressing alike remains.

“If you look back at their trajectory as a couple, for a very long time they were seen as very relatable, very down to earth and quite casual. I think what we’ve seen a little bit more of in recent months is them looking much more serious,” Holt told WWD ahead of King Charles III’s coronation in 2023.

The Millennial Prince and Princess of Wales are worlds away from their parents’ generation and from the former Prince and Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana. They’ve made clear from the start that they want to be modern royals, in touch with their subjects and with the issues of the day. They want to be seen as compassionate change-makers, advocates for British charities and people and strong parents to their three children.
From the duo wearing matching white cowboy hats during their 2011 tour of Canada to when they matched in maroon during Middleton’s first public royal engagement following the completion of her chemotherapy treatment in October, the couple have mastered power dressing — and couples’ coordination.
