‘We’ve borrowed money to invest in machinery and sheds, and my husband puts in long hours on the farm. But there’s no formal partnership, no legal transfer and I’m not sure about a will. How can we make sure we get what we deserve – and avoid a family row?’
‘Given the amount of investment you and your husband have made in the farm, I do not think that it is unreasonable to ask your father-in-law to transfer the farm to your husband at this stage’ Photo: Getty
Query: Dear Mary Frances, my husband and I have been farming his family land in the west of Ireland for nearly 20 years. We’ve poured our life into it over the years, my husband working long hours seven days a week to try to improve it.
We even borrowed money a number of years ago which we are still paying back, with my job, to invest in new sheds and machinery. My husband is the only one in his family – he has two siblings – who has shown any interest in the farm down the years.
