Being chosen to be a bridesmaid is an honour and most people are hugely flattered to be asked. But while it highlights the bride’s feelings towards the women who will be by her side on her big day, there is often underlying financial stress that many bridesmaids are reluctant to speak about.
This is something that Dublin woman Maria O’Brien* can attest to. She was overjoyed to be asked to be chief bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding last year, but says she “hadn’t realised how much it would cost” and found herself “almost resentful’ when her credit-card statement arrived.
