Valerie Bertinelli has experienced multiple loves in the public eye.
The actress’ most famous romance was, perhaps, her marriage to late rocker Eddie Van Halen. Bertinelli was married to the musician for more than two decades before they called it quits in 2007.
Bertinelli spoke candidly about her relationship with Van Halen after watching their son Wolfgang Van Halen‘s episode of the Paramount+ series Behind the Music.
“I’d stopped it many times because it was just too brutal to watch for many reasons. One, seeing Wolfie’s pain,” she said. “Two, seeing what a better job I could have done as a parent even though he turned out magnificently. I made a lot of mistakes. And three, seeing what I had turned of Ed’s and my relationship — into some sort of fantasy, soulmate recreation of history.”

Bertinelli noted that “nothing” in their marriage made her feel “loved and wanted and cared for.” She added: “Nothing that would scream soulmate, that’s for sure.”

Scott Colomby
Throughout her time on the One Day at a Time set in the late 1970s, it was widely rumored that Bertinelli dated the show’s guest star Colomby.
Paul Shaffer
Bertinelli wrote in her Losing It memoir that she had a brief romance with the musician in the 1970s — when she was 16 and he was 27.
“We went out twice, including New Year’s Eve,” she wrote. “Then his girlfriend called, and I never heard from him again.”
Steven Spielberg
During a 2025 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Bertinelli revealed that she and Spielberg briefly dated in the 1980s.
“We were together for, I don’t know, three [or] four months and he still has a bowling shirt of mine,” she quipped, noting that they “had a ball” during the brief romance.
Eddie Van Halen
Bertinelli and Van Halen were married for 26 years before calling it quits.
They tied the knot in 1981 and welcomed son Wolfgang in March 1991. Bertinelli and Van Halen first separated in 2001 but officially divorced in 2007. He died in October 2020.
Tom Vitale
While Bertinelli and Van Halen were separated, she kicked off relationship with Vitale. The two started dating in 2004, getting engaged six years later in May 2010. They got married in January 2011 and after 10 years, Bertinelli filed for divorce. Her November 2021 filing cited irreconcilable differences, and their divorce was finalized one year later.
Mike Goodnough
Bertinelli kept the beginning of her relationship with Goodnough quiet during their early days, playing coy during a March 2024 interview and only saying there was someone “very special” in her life. Goodnough’s identity was revealed the following month, but by November 2024, rumors started to swirl that they had split. Bertinelli confirmed the breakup in March 2025.
“I look at life with a different perspective and caring because of my experiences and conversations with him,” she shared via Instagram Stories at the time. “And he’s been a big part of helping me heal from some old childhood wounds I never knew what to do with or even where to start.”
