The woman (66) was knocked down on the Rathbawn Road, Castlebar, Co Mayo on Thursday morning.
News of her tragic death has been met with deep shock and sadness in Castlebar.
The accident happened at 9.55am on Thursday morning and gardaí have appealed for witnesses.
Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said people are “horrified and devastated” by the news.
“The whole town is just in shock. Everybody knew her and she was a really lovely lady,” he said.
“She always had such a pleasant smile. So this is just a terrible loss to her family and all who knew her.
“I am just so sorry for them.”
Cllr Harry Barrett, echoed the comments of Cllr Kilcoyne.
“It is absolutely heart-breaking,” he said.
“Everybody is stunned. There is a real cloud hanging over the town.
“When these terrible tragedies happen, it is hard to find words but I can only offer my deepest condolences to her family and friends.”
In an appeal for witnesses, gardaí asked any road users in the area at the time with dashcam footage to come forward.
“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on Rathbawn Road in Castlebar, Co. Mayo today, Thursday 24th April 2025.
“The incident involved a pedestrian and a lorry and occurred this morning at approximately 9:55am.
“The pedestrian, a woman aged her 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“The driver of the lorry has been taken to hospital for treatment.
“The road was closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators which is now completed. The road has reopened.
“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 9:30am and 10:00am are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
