There were certain advantages to casting former NFL star Mel Owens as the next Golden Bachelor lead, according to show alum Nick Viall.
“The inside tea for The Golden Bachelor is that there is an extra effort and, I think, part of the consideration of picking … Mel is that him residing in a major city was a plus,” Nick, 44, speculated on the Thursday, April 24, episode of his eponymous podcast. “They’re always hoping that they can introduce someone to someone and love happens. It’s, maybe, more likely that someone might relocate to a city like Los Angeles than the middle of Indiana.”
News broke earlier this week that 66-year-old attorney Mel, who lives in Los Angeles, will be the next Golden Bachelor. His Golden predecessor was Gerry Turner, whose marriage to winner Theresa Nist fell apart within three months and was partially attributed to geographic distances. (Gerry, 73, lives in Indiana, while Theresa, 71, resides and works in New Jersey.)
“No offense to Indiana, [it’s a] beautiful state,” Nick further said. “Like, I’m from Wisconsin. Maybe they don’t want to move to Fond du Lac [in Wisconsin] for love?”
Nick was briefly engaged to Vanessa Grimaldi after his season of The Bachelor in 2017. He has since married Natalie Joy, who cohosts his “Viall Files” podcast.
“I think having a Golden Bachelor who resides in L.A. will definitely be a lot easier to have a connection that lasts,” Natalie, 26, added on Thursday.
While specific details about Mel’s season (including a premiere date) have not been revealed, show host Jesse Palmer has insight into why he was chosen as the lead.
“Mel is obviously super handsome. He’s very charming, he’s very intelligent, he’s very successful,” Jesse, 46, exclusively told Us Weekly at Hulu’s Get Real event on Tuesday, April 22. “He had this incredible pro football career and transitioned into becoming a successful warrior. I think while he’s had a lot of success professionally, there have been some hills and valleys in his personal life.”
According to Jesse, Mel became a “devoted father” to his two kids after getting divorced. (The names of Mel’s children and ex-wife have not been publicly revealed.)
“I had a chance to visit with him and his kids yesterday, and it’s really a unique and special bond to watch,” Jesse told Us. “I think he’s in this unique time now where he can finally focus a little bit more on it himself. His kids are getting ready to go off to college, and I think he really wants to find a special person.”
During the Get Real panel, Jesse also confirmed that casting for the season’s women is underway.
“I don’t think he’s necessarily looking for anything heavily extravagant. When you talk with him, what he misses most about being married and being in a relationship, it’s just having and enjoying those simple everyday moments,” Jesse told Us. “He’s just looking for companionship. It’s just really pure and just listening to him talk about it is really moving. So I think he’s going to be a great lead. I think he’s a great choice to be our next Golden Bachelor.”
