Only Doctor Odyssey would make Mean Girls‘ Aaron Samuels and Parks and Recreation‘s Jerry Gergich a couple.
During the Thursday, May 15, episode of the ABC series, Jonathan Bennett reprised his role as Matt in the possible series finale where he reunited with his fiancé. Turns out he is dating Jim O’Heir‘s Barry, who got stuck on land in the previous episode amid an earthquake tsunami combo.
Matt accompanied Avery (Phillipa Soo) to help rescue Barry after he suffered a medical health scare. Barry nearly died before Avery and Max (Joshua Jackson) used their knowledge to save his life, which allowed Matt and Barry to then get married at the end of the episode.
Doctor Odyssey, which premiered in September 2024, has thrived when it comes to surprising celebrity cameos and shocking story lines. The medical drama previously surprised Us when a March episode showed Shania Twain‘s fictional character, Heather, realizing that she was expecting a baby with Don Johnson’s Captain Massey even though she was in menopause.
Captain Massey revealed to Max in a May episode that Heather had a pregnancy loss. Despite his attempts to be there for his girlfriend, Heather, who didn’t make an appearance in the episode, wanted to take time for herself instead of grieving with Captain Massey.
“I told her I wanted to come be with her and she doesn’t want that,” he revealed. “I have called her I don’t know how many times over the last few days. It just goes straight to voicemail. Heather and this whole thing, it got me thinking about the future and life after the Odyssey. But you just can’t make someone else want the things you want. So I have taken the next best course: accept and surrender.”
Earlier in the season, Doctor Odyssey also featured a threesome between Avery, Max and Tristan (Sean Teale) that escalated into a condom breaking — and a pregnancy. None of them knew who the father was in the situation until Avery realized she wasn’t actually pregnant.
Jackson, 46, previously spoke exclusively to Us Weekly on the show’s approach to Max, Avery and Tristan‘s romance.
“There are still certain limitations and restrictions to doing something on network television because of the standards and practice issues that you deal with. [We were] able to take something that is very challenging and daring and play inside of the box of network TV,” he told Us in March. “We got to explore what you can and cannot show and still created a scene that I think is very sexy and challenging.”
Jackson continued: “It was within the boundaries of what we are allowed to do [and] that is one of the high watermarks of what we were able to achieve from directorial to writing to acting. Everybody came together to make something that you really hadn’t seen before — particularly on network TV. I think we did a pretty good job with that.”
