Garrett Keenaghan, volunteer with the No Name Club and head of research at TUD School of Architecture, Building and Environment chats to Mary McCarthy
Garrett Keenaghan says he felt pressurised in school – and most of all, he didn’t like being told what to do
Ten years ago, when our eldest was 15, we were looking for local activities he might enjoy – and we came across the No Name Club in Hollywood, Co Wicklow. My friend Tom was the chairperson and he encouraged me to bring Jack down.
The clubs have been going since 1978, when three friends set them up to provide a social life alternative to the drinking culture for 15- to 18-year-olds. We were expecting Jack to lose interest once his transition year was out, but he brought along a couple of his mates and stayed.
