Mexican authorities are investigating the death of 23-year-old Valeria Márquez as a femicide
Mexican authorities are investigating after a beauty influencer was shot and killed while streaming on TikTok Live, with the video continuing even after her injury.
Valeria Márquez was a content creator focused on lifestyle and beauty influencing, with over 100,000 followers on both TikTok and Instagram. The 23-year-old was streaming on May 12 from her salon in Jalisco State, Mexico, showing her followers a stuffed pig she had received as a present when a man entered her storefront in the Colonia Real del Carmen neighborhood of Zapopan, Mexico. The camera — which was aimed at Márquez — shows the creator confirming to the man her name, before he opens fire, striking her in the head and chest, according to a statement from the Jalisco Attorney General’s office.
According to the Attorney General, Márquez was already dead when paramedics arrived on scene. Authorities are investigating the shooting as a femicide and are still gathering evidence, which will include an autopsy.
Márquez’s video was still filming after the creator was shot, but was ended by an unidentified person in the store. TikTok did not respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment on how long the live — and subsequent clippings of the shooting — were available on the app. But Community Guidelines prohibit “disturbing, or extremely violent content” on the platform. Memorial accounts to Márquez are already being created on TikTok and Instagram. “I hope justice is served,” reads one comment on her Instagram. “She didn’t deserve that ending.”
