Israeli act’s dress rehearsal disrupted by protestors
The Israeli act was disrupted by protestors during the second semi-final of the ESC on Thursday afternoon.
It comes amid ongoing controversy about the participation of Israel in the song contest.
Six people unravelled flags and blew whistles when Israeli act Yuval Rapheal was performing.
The individuals were escorted out of the building by security.
In a statement on the Swiss website it says that: “The performance of Israeli singer Yuval Raphael was disrupted. Six people, including a family, disrupted the rehearsal with oversized flags and whistles.”
“Security personnel were able to quickly identify those involved and escort them out of the hall.”
The organisers added: “We would like to thank all the artists, delegations, staff, fans and guests, including many children, who are making ESC 2025 a unique experience. At the same time, we would like to emphasise that the organisers are committed to a neutral, safe, inclusive and respectful environment at the ESC.”
The Israeli act will perform in the second half of the show.
Rapheal is a survivor of the October 7, 2023, attacks and survived by hiding under the bodies of others.
On Wednesday night, a silent flag protest took part in the city with hundreds gathering to object to Israel’s participation in the final.
“It is important to not allow Israel to have a platform as big as this to present itself as another normal country… celebrating music and diversity when in reality this is culture propaganda for them,” a man called Andreas said.
The EBU said that spectators are allowed to bring any flag, from any country, into the stadium.
Audience members can also bring in trans and pride flags.
However, the competing delegations can only bring one national flag on stage and in the green room.
All flags have to adhere to certain size guidelines.
If they do not adhere to these size guidelines they will not be allowed inside the venue.
