Tom Cruise was back in action for the premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
The actor, 62, attended the premiere of the franchise’s eighth film in France on Wednesday, May 14, alongside leading lady Hayley Atwell. Cruise also posed with Mission: Impossible costars Pom Klementieff, Angela Bassett, Esai Morales, Hannah Waddingham and Greg Tarzan Davis as well as director Christopher McQuarrie.
Before the movie started, Cruise and McQuarrie received a standing ovation upon entering the theater, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Prior to hitting the iconic steps of at the Palais des Festivals, Cruise attended a more casual photocall with the Mission: Impossible cast, where he wore a monochromatic burgundy polo and trousers with a platinum Rolex watch.

This marks Cruise’s third appearance at the festival after attending for Far and Away in 1992 and Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, at which time he also received an Honorary Palme d’Or award and held a masterclass for attendees.
In April, news broke that Cruise planned to premiere Final Reckoning at Cannes ahead of its May 23 release in theaters.
“In Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, who he has portrayed since the beginning of the franchise in 1996, and his IMF team ask you to trust them one last time,” the Cannes press release read. “After almost three decades of thrills, stunts and intrigue, The Final Reckoning delivers an unforgettable cinematic experience.”
In addition to the previously mentioned stars, joining Cruise in the movie are returning cast members Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga and Vanessa Kirby.

Throughout his career, Cruise has starred in eight films within the spy action franchise, including 1996’s Mission: Impossible, 2000’s Mission: Impossible 2, 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout and 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
While there have been hints (the title, for one) that Final Reckoning could be the last Mission: Impossible film ever, Cruise has avoided confirming or denying whether the franchise is coming to an end.
“You gotta see the movie,” he told Empire in an interview published in February. “It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment because it really is something that you have to experience.”
However, Cruise described Final Reckoning as “an epic, emotional journey of the entire franchise.”
Director Christopher McQuarrie also played coy in the interview, teasing the future of Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character, a spy who specializes in completing (as the title suggests) ostensibly impossible missions.
“It is, I hope, the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc,” McQuarrie, 56, told the outlet. “I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.”
