The Eurovision song contest began in Lugano in 1956.
And last night, 36 years after it was last hosted in Switzerland (following Celine Dion’s win in 1988 with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi), the competition kicked off in earnest in the picturesque city of Basel with the first semi-final.
