Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard’s daughter, Ramona Sarsgaard, was arrested during the Columbia University protests.
The New York Post reported on Friday, May 9, that Ramona, 18, was arrested during the anti-Israel protests at the university on Wednesday, May 7. Police sources told the outlet that Ramona, who is a student at the institution, received a desk appearance ticket for criminal trespassing.
Ramona was one of nearly 80 people who were arrested while storming the school’s Butler Library on Wednesday evening. CNN reported that more than 65 Columbia students were on interim suspension pending further investigation. It is unclear if Ramona is one of the suspended students.
Neither Ramona nor her parents have publicly addressed the incident. Us Weekly has reached out to Gyllenhaal and Peter for comment.
The protest at Columbia was a call to the university to divest from companies that have ties to Israel. NYPD was called in to help secure the library during the Wednesday night demonstration. Officials stated that two school safety officers were injured.
University president Claire Shipman released a statement following the incident.
“I spent the late afternoon and evening at Butler Library, as events were unfolding, to understand the situation on the ground and to be able to make the best decisions possible,” the statement read. “I arrived to see one of our Public Safety officers wheeled out on a gurney and another getting bandaged. As I left hours later, I walked through the reading room, one of the many jewels of Butler Library, and I saw it defaced and damaged in disturbing ways and with disturbing slogans. Violence and vandalism, hijacking a library — none of that has any place on our campus. These aren’t Columbia’s values.”

Gyllenhaal, 47, and Peter, 54, got engaged in 2006 and welcomed Ramona that same year. The couple tied the knot in 2009 in Italy. In 2012, Gyllenhaal and Peter expanded their family with daughter Gloria.
Gyllenhaal and Peter’s daughters have primarily stayed out of the limelight with the exception of a rare appearance with their parents. In September 2022, Gyllenhaal and Ramona enjoyed a girls’ trip to Paris Fashion Week. The mother-daughter duo attended a Dior fashion show. Before that, Ramona attended the 2021 Gotham Awards with her mom and dad.
The actress previously opened up about how she and Peter divide parenting responsibilities, especially when they had to assist with their little one’s homework assignments.
“[Ramona] is really, like, a notably excellent student and there are places where I can really help her. I love to read her essays. … I studied literature. I love talking about the books she’s reading,” she recalled during a 2019 Q&A event. “My husband is really the music guy. He believes that learning to read music and learning to play music is just as important as learning anything else you learn in school. I can read music like a kindergartner. I don’t have the discipline, and he really does. He has taught both of my daughters how to play instruments.”
