Ireland is “significantly less likely” to experience a power outage of the type that recently hit Spain and Portugal, according to an analysis by Viotas, a Limerick company with expertise in managing electricity grids.
Its chief executive, Professor Paddy Finn, said in order to get the national grid ready for operating with up to 75pc renewable energy by 2020, EirGrid’s DS3 programme introduced a series of risk mitigation measures, including high-speed contingency reserve.
