Non-fiction book review: Eilis O’Hanlon on Jacqueline Connolly’s memoir Deadly Silence
Clodagh and her children Liam, Niall and Ryan
Sunday is the most common day for men to murder their families. It was some time during the night of Sunday, August 28, 2016, just hours before he was due to return to work after the summer holidays, that deputy school principal Alan Hawe murdered his wife Clodagh and her three young sons at their home near Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, before taking his own life.
They had spent the evening at the boys’ maternal grandmother Mary’s house. “There were no red flags, nothing untoward,” this new book about the tragedy recalls, “just an ordinary evening with tea and biscuits and chat and the three boys eating crisps in front of the TV.”
