David Beckham and fellow soccer legend Gary Neville are leaders of the ownership group that has acquired English soccer League Two club Salford City, the franchise announced on Thursday, May 8.
Beckham, 50, said in a statement that he is prepared to oversee “every big decision that’s made and every little decision that’s made” alongside Neville, also 50.
“We’re definitely not doing it for a laugh and it’s also not for the romantic side of things,” the statement read. “Yes, we care about the club — but we’re doing it to win. We want Salford to be successful and we have had success, but then we want it to go on to the next level.”
“I always dream big so I’m always going to want us to get to the pinnacle of football and be in the Premier League,” he continued. “But there’s a lot of hard work and a lot of investment to be done up until that point.”
Beckham’s commitment comes amid his well-publicized family drama. Us Weekly exclusively reported earlier this week that David’s son Brooklyn missed his father’s 50th birthday celebration on Saturday, May 3 due to his feelings about Romeo’s girlfriend, Kim Turnbull.
The source explained that Brooklyn, 26, and his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, requested a “separate meet-up” to celebrate David’s birthday in an effort to not interact with Romeo, 22, and Turnbull. David and his wife, Victoria Beckham, rejected the request.
“David and Victoria are over it,” the insider said. “They’ve thrown in the towel over the whole thing.”
“David and Victoria just want to treat everyone the same and approach life like a family and the family does things a certain way,” the source added. “But Brooklyn isn’t playing it like that, and everything is a drama.”
A second source told Us that there is also drama between Victoria, 51, and Nicola, 30, dating back to when Nicola and Brooklyn married in 2022.
“Things never really got smoothed over, and you can tell it still affects everyone,” the source explained. “The tension is still present and it’s hard for Brooklyn at times. Brooklyn’s having a tough time with it. He’s super stubborn and just wants space from his family right now.”
While the Beckham family saga continues to play out in public, the source adds that David and Victoria want the “drama to stop,” and were unhappy when the incident around David’s birthday became public.
“They’re really upset that it’s all become so public,” the source said. “It’s embarrassing for them, especially since they’ve always tried to come across as this super tight, united family. Victoria wants all of her kids to get along and wants everyone to move on. It’s upsetting for her to see as a mother.”
