When I started my quest for a hobby, I never expected it to take in watersports. I have a blood-curdling fear of deep water that dates from an incident when I was 12. Swimming in the sea on a stereotypical Irish family holiday to the Costa del Sol, I got carried out by a current and had to be rescued by the coast guard. I have never recovered from the mortification.
I attempted a small level of exposure therapy on a recent sojourn to Salthill in Galway. I tried infiltrating the Dryrobe gang and went for a sea swim. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would, with the caveat that the water was especially shallow and the tide was out. But because this litmus test went so well, I figured I might be ready to try an actual watersport.
