When I was a young woman in my 20s, I lived beside the National Boxing Stadium, happily vulnerable to the dazzle of the amateur boxing world – the plucky suffering, the glistening satin-smooth of a boxer’s back, the occasional glimpses of crumpled fives and 50s, the odd bit of razzmatazz, the fluttering nervous thrill before the fight, the sense of being part of an alternative world.
I loved boxing. You see, male networks have always intriqued me and when I eventually became a boxing correspondent, it was a predominately male establishment.
