Skellig Michael could remain closed to visitors for the entire summer following the escalation of a legal dispute over the issuing of landing permits for tourist boats.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) is facing separate High Court challenges from two boat operators who claim they unfairly lost out in the recent awarding of licences to 15 vessels to take visitors to the world heritage site for the upcoming season.
