By this time next week there might well be a new pope. The conclave that will elect him begins on Wednesday with one vote taking place that day and then up to four per day after that, with a break after every three days of voting.
The unusual thing this time is that so many of the cardinals eligible to take part in the conclave (that is, the 135 under the age of 80), come from outside Europe and the Western world generally.
