Chevelle‘s Sam Loeffler recently sat down with Full Metal Jackie on KLOS‘ “Whiplash” to discuss the band’s newest surprise-drop single, “Rabbit Hole (Cowards, Pt. 1)” – their first single in four years – and the unannounced record it comes from.
It will be Chevelle‘s tenth studio record, and it’s actually the band’s first in over a decade without longtime producer, Joe Barresi, at the helm.
He started as the band’s producer on Chevelle‘s 2011 record, Hats Off To The Bull, but for their most recent record, Barresi himself suggested he take a step back from the reigns: “He said to us, he goes, ‘You guys should do something different. Go try doing a record yourselves. See how it goes,'” Loeffler explained (transcribed via Blabbermouth).
“It’s the hardest thing we’ve ever done, for sure. It’s probably not worth it, but we did it, and we can say we did it,” Loeffler continued.
And not only have the band self-produced their record, but it’s their first record with new label, Alchemy Recordings – “We branched out and became part of a label with our friends that we’ve known for 25 years in the business,” Loeffler elaborated, while stressing that they “still have a very good relationship with [Epic Records],” their former label. Loeffler goes onto explain the decision further, stating that one half of Alchemy Recordings, Danny Wimmer, “tried to sign us to Flawless Records back in like 2000, and it didn’t work out… so now, after all these years, we’ve signed with him and his current label, so it was kind of cool.”
Additionally, apart from their departure from Epic Records and signing to Alchemy Recordings and self-producing a record for the first time, the next Chevelle record may not be too par for the course.
Vocalist and guitarist Pete Loeffler is the band’s lyricist that “likes to write about things going on around him,” and writes about “anything that’s just interesting you can make interesting in an interesting way. That’s a lot of ‘interesting’ words there” – so, nothing has really changed on that front. But, also Loeffler offered – without giving too much away – that the next single is “definitely about going down rabbit holes.”
And when describing the record last year to TribLive.com, Sam Loeffler said that they’re “always skewing towards heavy. These two songs that we’ve been working on right now are definitely different from everything we did… This [record] definitely sounds different than just rock music, definitely different.”
There’s no word as to when Chevelle‘s second single will be out, or the unannounced record – clearly – but factoring in the surprise drop of their first single, we may not know until it’s out on streaming platforms.
In the meantime, Chevelle will be embarking on a massive North American tour with Asking Alexandria and Dead Poet Society opening. You can check out dates for the tour below.
