Thank God Frances Fitzgerald announced she’s not running for president. That gets me out of an awkward situation. I’m a huge fan of the former MEP and minister, but how on earth would I choose between her and Mairead McGuinness?
I sometimes get the feeling Fine Gael insiders don’t have much love for McGuinness, so her soaraway lead in polls must dismay those who begrudge her well-earned success. She’s an extraordinary worker, whip-smart, has the country roots and city sophistication. I wilt in admiration when I see her in action.
