Donald Trump thinks Stephen A. Smith has what it takes to run for president.
Smith, who has made multiple appearances on news broadcasts this year, was a commentator on NewsNation’s Cuomo Town Hall on Wednesday, April 29. During the news program, Trump, 78, called into the show. Former Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly asked if the current president had any advice for Smith, 57, if he wanted to enter the race, which led to the ESPN commentator shaking his head and putting his hands over his face.
.
“Stephen A, he’s a good guy, he’s a smart guy. I love watching him,” Trump said. “He’s got great entertainment skills, which is very important. People watch him. You know, a lot of these Democrats I watch … I say they have no chance.”
Trump continued: “I’ve been pretty good at picking people and picking candidates, and I will tell you I’d love to see him run.”
This year Smith’s name has been floated around as a possible candidate. The sports reporter popped up in a poll alongside such political figures as Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and more.
Since gaining popularity Smith, who has been outspoken about politics, has gone on to provide commentary on multiple political and news outlets. While Smith didn’t seem open to the idea at first, he has been taking the call to service a little more seriously after receiving support from others. (Smith previously stated that he affiliates as an independent.)
“I have no choice, because I’ve had elected officials, and I’m not going to give their names, elected officials coming up to me. I’ve had folks who are pundits come up to me,” Smith told ABC News’ “This Week” co-anchor Jonathan Karl in April. “I’ve had folks that got a lot of money, billionaires and others that have talked to me about exploratory committees and things of that nature. I’m not a politician. I’ve never had a desire to be a politician.”
Smith added that it wasn’t just politicos who have encouraged him but members of his own community.
“Here’s the reality: People, literally people, have walked up to me, including my own pastor, for crying out loud, who has said to me, ‘You don’t know what God has planned for you. At least show the respect to the people who believe in you, who respect you, who believe that you can make a difference in this country, to leave the door open for any possibilities some to three years down the line,’” he continued. “And that’s what I’ve decided to do.”
Smith has not officially entered the 2028 race yet.
