It may be early springtime, but the street style in lower Manhattan is heating up quick.
After a particularly brutal winter, New Yorkers are eager to soak up the sunshine, swapping out their hefty knits and outerwear for crop tops and shorts, aka the new Gen Z uniform.
While micro shorts were undoubtedly the talk of the town last summer, and the trend has legs as these pictures show, longer lengths are also part of the trend forecast, especially an edgier mid-calf Bermuda.
Mostly, shorts were seen paired with black leather biker boots — a styling combo that’s been dominating on high-end runways as well. Just take the two ladies caught mid-strut by WWD photographer Lexi Moreland who look like they stepped right out of a Hedi Slimane campaign for Celine. Furthering the off-duty model vibe, one added a trucker hat to her ensemble, while the other sported an unzipped sweatshirt.
Coincidentally, Celine is also the go-to reference in denim. The influence of the French brand’s flared jeans that Kendrick Lamar wore during his Super Bowl halftime show performance continue to reign with similar versions covering the streets. It should come as no surprise though, given they earned the top spot on Lyst’s “hottest products” index for the first quarter this week.
Distressing and personalization also remains popular, whether ripped, patch-worked or stained, the intention is to look unintentionally undone.
But for those seeking more polish, tent dresses in lightweight fabrics that pick up every breeze proved to be a one-and-done hero piece. And despite New Yorkers’ pension for wearing all-black, floral prints, like the abstract tulips seen here, are a perennial favorite. As the saying goes: “April showers bring May flowers.”
