In an hour or so, Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy will look completely unrecognisable. There will be the make-up, the array of glitzy clothes and the gravity-defying heels, of course – but “the crowning” is what will really transform her.
“That’s what they call that moment within the Tina Turner musical sphere – putting on that iconic wig,” she laughs, throwing her long braids over her shoulder. “It does feel like you are putting on a crown, and that was what people saw Tina Turner as with that blonde, bombshell, spiky hair: a queen.” She nods. “The first time, it felt like an out-of-body experience: ‘Wow, this is me becoming Tina Turner.’ It was an emotional moment.”
