Brittany Cartwright is sharing a candid update on her son, Cruz, and how her split with estranged husband Jax Taylor is seemingly impacting her son.
“The peace in my house is something that I feel like is helping him,” Cartwright, 36, exclusively shared with Us Weekly on Tuesday, April 29, when supporting season 2 of The Valley. “It’s helping me. It’s helping everything. Because whenever I had to deal with that negative energy every day, I mean, it was wearing on me. He deserves a happy mama.”
The Bravo star went on to explain that since she is no longer living with Taylor, 45, she is focused on creating a positive home environment where she hopes her son will thrive after receiving his autism diagnosis.
“He’s starting to say a couple more words,” Cartwright shared with Us about her 3-year-old son. “He is just such a good kid. He’s so happy. He’s always smiling and laughing, and he’s just catching up in his own way. It’s beautiful to see because whenever you have a kid on the spectrum, you celebrate every little milestone because you wait for it — and then it happens and it’s the best day ever. I’m so proud of him every single day.”
Earlier this month, the Vanderpump Rules alum shared with fans for the first time that Cruz was diagnosed with autism and is mostly nonverbal.

Since sharing her family’s story, Cartwright said she has been inundated with supportive messages from fans and strangers who also have a family member with autism.
“There’s just so much that I’m still learning as I’m going, and there’s so many other parents that have reached out to me who I can also learn from,” Cartwright shared. “I think it’s just been so beautiful, and I really want to help other families and mothers that are going through something like that.”
Cartwright believes that “early intervention is key” and if people may see different signs early on because of Cruz’s story, it’s all worth it.
“I really want to be a positive advocate for the autism spectrum, the whole community,” she said. “It is very broad.”

When she’s not being a hands-on parent to Cruz, Cartwright is navigating a public divorce from Taylor.
While the pair still have disagreements since Cartwright filed for divorce in August 2024, she is quick to give credit to her estranged husband for helping and wanting to be there for his son.
“Cruz is the most important thing for both of us,” she said. “It’s just difficult coparenting whenever you’re not always getting along and things like that. But we definitely both want to be positive, especially using our platform for the good to help other people.”
