President Donald Trump couldn’t help but get in a dig at Taylor Swift while welcoming the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to the White House.
Trump, 78, celebrated the Eagles Super Bowl LIX victory on Monday, April 28, in a ceremony that featured many Eagles players, head coach Nick Sirianni and owner Howie Roseman.
“I watched in person,” Trump said of the Eagles triumph in February. “I was there along with Taylor Swift. How did that work out? How did that one work out?”
Swift, 35, of course, is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who the Eagles trounced 40-22 in the Super Bowl.
The pop star was in attendance at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans to watch the game, during which she was loudly booed while being shown on the stadium’s big screen.
A confused Swift could be seen turning to friend and rapper Ice Spice, who accompanied her to the Super Bowl, asking, “What’s going on?”
Trump received a mixture of cheers and boos when he was shown inside the stadium, according to Reuters.
The Eagles’ visit to the White House on Monday was not without its own controversy. While the majority of the team’s roster attended the ceremony, some members of the organization — including quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver AJ Brown — skipped the event.
A White House official chalked up the players’ absences to “scheduling conflicts.”
Eagles running back Saquon Barkley attended the ceremony, which came one day after Barkley, 28, was seen golfing with the President at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
“lol some people are really upset cause I played golfed and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT,” Barkley posted via X on Monday morning. “Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump!”
He added, “Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have [an] amazing day 😂.”
Barkley was a major focus of Trump’s comments on Monday, insinuating that he tried convincing the running back’s former team, the New York Giants, not to let him walk out the door.
“By the way, I have to tell you something,” Trump said. “I was with the Giants, the head coach and some people. And I said, ‘Do anything you have to, but don’t lose Saquon.’ They lost Saquon. That was not good. I called that one. That was an easy one to call because he played damn well for the Giants, I can tell you that.”
Trump added, “He made the right decision, because it is a team sport And there are great people on this team.”
Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles in March 2024.
Giants spokesperson Pat Hanlon told Front Office Sports “there were no conversations” between Trump and the franchise about Barkley.
“With all due respect, stop yapping,” Hanlon posted via X on Monday. “Be the leader we all want you to be. And my 401K wants you to be. I’m trying to retire!! @realDonaldTrump.”
