Four years after his controversial departure from the ‘Sunday Independent’, the former columnist talks at length about losing friends over his uncompromising beliefs on Irish politics, serious health issues, how his sacking over activity on Twitter ‘destroyed’ his life — and why keeping Sinn Féin out of power became a ‘superior duty’ for him

Like Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, Eoghan Harris would prefer to be interviewed by himself.
He has been extremely unwell, fighting cancer and, recently, pneumonia and sepsis. He was wary about doing an interview. I suggested he feel free to send thoughts via text message or voice note, to save energy. “I can send you questions,” I said. “You wouldn’t know what to ask,” he said. “I’ll ask them myself.”
