Prince Harry may have left his working royal duties behind, but he is certainly busy jet-setting across the United States.
On Friday, April 25, the Duke of Sussex gave an impassioned speech during his appearance at the Living Legends of Aviation Awards at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
“There are moments in life that reveal a great deal about who we are — not just as individuals, but as a people,” Harry, 40, said while addressing the crowd at the event, which honors individuals who embody the pioneering spirit, innovation and excellence that define aviation and aerospace.
“Moments that test our courage, compassion and our commitment to one another,” he continued. “And time and again, what I’ve seen — what the world sees — is that first responders rise to that challenge every single time, yet we rarely get the chance to thank them.”
Prince Harry went on to share how the world saw “courage” and “commitment” back in January, when “fires swept through over 50 square miles of Los Angeles County — threatening homes, businesses” and “communities.”
“We saw an extraordinary group of men and women take to the skies, also risking their lives to protect people they would never meet,” he added. “Tonight, we thank and honor members of cour community, especially aerial firefighters and the supporting ground teams.”
Prince Harry’s remarks in L.A. came just days after he made a trip to New York City alongside his wife, Meghan Markle. According to TechCrunch, Harry made an under-the-radar surprise trip to the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund in Brooklyn during his East Coast visit.
“Thank God you guys exist. Thank God you guys are here,” he reportedly told the group of young leaders and funding working in the tech and online space, per the outlet.
“You have the knowledge and the skillset and the confidence and the bravery and the courage to be able to stand up to these things,” Prince Harry reportedly added, referring to the dangers of being online, including cyberbullying and other nefarious social media practices.
Attempts to make social media and online use safer for young people was the theme of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s New York City visit. While attending the TIME100 Summit, Meghan applauded the people who have been “working for several years” to make social media safer.
“No matter how polarized the world is, or what people may or may not agree on, one thing that we can all agree on is that our children should be safe,” she reportedly told the crowd. “All of our children should be safe, and I think tonight, all of these stories solidify that.”
