“The Ryan line is open.” It’s a catchphrase that probably means nothing to anyone below the age of 30, but for older generations of Irish radio listeners, it was a reassuring constant in an ever-changing world.
Gerry Ryan, who coined the pithy phrase for his long-running radio show, was one of RTÉ’s biggest stars for more than two decades. His death in 2010 has been keenly felt by the broadcaster ever since.
