I’d noticed her as soon as I walked into the playground, the way you often do with newborns. I walked from swing to slide, thinking of how there is something quietly magnificent, and magnetic, about a box-fresh baby.
Children stood around in an obedient circle, watching as her mother nursed her on a bench. Some of the other playground mums approached her, politely clucking in appreciation. One or two watched furtively out of their eye’s corner with a glimmer of envy, the way you might when you have unfinished business on the baby front.
