The heist occurred on Grafton Street.
A man is in garda custody following the robbery of €50,000 worth of jewels from a high-end jewellers in the capital, which sparked a major manhunt.
About 2.45am, gardaí got reports of a burglary at a retail premises on Kildare Street in Dublin 2 and officers from Pearse Street station rushed to the scene. They were told a man had been seen fleeing into St Stephen’s Green park.
After a major search, the suspect was apprehended about 3am hiding in bushes within the park.
“On arrival, they encountered a suspect and he fled the scene on foot. He was observed entering St Stephen’s Green park and pursued by gardaí on foot. The man (20s) was apprehended by gardaí in the park and arrested,” a garda spokesperson said.
Because it was night-time, a search for the jewellery did not result in the stolen items being immediately recovered.
Officers secured the area to ensure nobody could gain access to the park and a second search was initiated when first light broke earlier this morning. This led to gardaí recovering the €50,000 worth of jewellery discarded by the alleged thief within St Stephen’s Green.
The man is expected to appear before court later on today.
He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in Dublin.
