How can anybody have supported Donald Trump in the first place? Looking back, all the signs were there. The Capitol Hill insurgency of January 6, for one thing; the fondness for Vladimir Putin for another. The embrace of norm violation on a scale never previously seen. The relentless post-truth improv that characterised his public rhetoric.
It was a sign of desperation, I suppose, as the alternative − president Harris − promised to solidify the cult of identity politics, both in American life and around the world, undercut the West’s commitment to Israel and drive us all further into the quick-sands of decline.
