He was named and shamed by Revenue for tax defaulting. The kind of story that is public interest, open-and-shut.
But the disgraced landlord thought differently.
Outed for failing to pay taxes, Christian Carter didn’t issue a public apology. He didn’t offer an explanation. Instead, he turned his sights on the journalist who reported the truth.
The former landlord decided to use the courts not to correct a falsehood, but to recast himself as the victim.

Today we bring you Behind Closed Doors, the first of a two-part special from The Indo Daily. Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Amy Molloy, social affairs correspondent with the Irish Independent and by Kevin Doyle, group head of news at Mediahuis Ireland, to delve inside the contradictions, the courtroom and the communications that exposed the truth in Christian Carter’s case against the journalist reporting on his tax defaults – and to ask, what does it mean for press freedom in Ireland?
