When a distant relative reached out to Arlene Harris to tell her that she had the BRCA1 gene, it prompted Arlene and other family members to get tested – potentially saving their lives
Arlene Harris underwent a hysterectomy to reduce her cancer risk
For me, it all started in 2015, when my larger-than-life father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 68. This variation of the disease is known as the ‘silent killer’ due to the stealth like way it creeps in and doesn’t reveal its hand until it’s too late to fight back.
It is considered to have the worst cancer prognosis globally, with just 13pc of patients surviving five years or more after diagnosis, so without any alarming signs or symptoms until a few weeks before and no reason to be vigilant, he didn’t stand a chance.
